Chemical Peels Q & A

What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels are cosmetic treatments that use acidic solutions to exfoliate your skin. The extent of the exfoliation depends on the strength of the acid used during peels. Chemical peels can reduce lines, wrinkles, age spots, scars, and other signs of aging and imperfections with minimal to no downtime.

What are the different types of chemical peels?

Chemical peels come in varying strengths based on the type of acid your provider uses. The three basic types of chemical peels include:

Light peels

A light chemical peel removes outer skin layers to treat acne, uneven skin tone, dryness, and fine lines. Your provider might use alpha-hydroxy acid or another mild acid during the procedure and may recommend a light peel every two to five weeks.

Medium peels

Glycolic acid and trichloroacetic acid peels are stronger chemical peels that exfoliate the top and middle layers of your skin. This type of peel improves the appearance of lines and wrinkles, acne scars, and discoloration. It can also treat some precancerous skin growths and smooth rough skin.

Deep peels

Deep chemical peels remove the skin in deeper layers. This treatment uses trichloroacetic acid or phenol to reduce severe wrinkles and get rid of scars, skin discoloration, and precancerous growths. Though you won’t need to repeat deep peels, the recovery time is a bit longer.

What can I expect during a chemical peel?

Your aesthetic specialist begins by cleansing your skin and applying a chemical solution to it. They allow the peel to gently exfoliate your skin for a set period of time before removing the solution. Afterward, your skin may appear red and feel as though you have a mild sunburn.

How long does it take to see the results of a chemical peel?

You should start to see improvements in the look of your skin within seven days of a chemical peel, with continued improvements over the next few months. To maintain a youthful appearance, your provider recommends you repeat most chemical peels every so often. They advise you on a schedule that works best for your skin type.
